The review has become possible in recent years with the development of information technology and mathematical methods. The task of nutrition calculation is to bring constantly supplementing nutrition expertise to a widespread use in health promotion also through understanding the immune system.

Nutrition calculations utilize intelligent calculation methods for generating reliable results. The calculation uses fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms to find the best result. Fuzzy logic brings with it the handling of uncertainty and contradictions. Evolutionary computation makes it possible to deal with a huge number of alternatives. Individual preferences and restrictions are included in the calculation. The result is a set of good solutions to achieve sufficient variation in flexible diet improvement.
Nutrition calculation applies nutrition expertise based on nutritional recommendations and scientific evidence. The results of the calculation can also be used to supplement expert information, e.g. through machine learning.
The evolution of measurements brings expanding opportunities to evaluate the effectiveness of nutritional guidelines.
Nutrition calculations can serve as a data collection and analysis platform both in nutrition research and in examining nutrition issues in well-being and health-related research.

International nutritional recommendations

A broader review of nutrient density is scientifically justified from many perspectives.
Nordic nutritional recommendations, on which Finland's national recommendations are also based, emphasize the importance of diverse nutrients in the diet.
These include the Nordic recommendations for energy and nutrients based on the latest research evidence. The recommendations are based on hundreds of expert opinions on healthy eating.
In Finland the importance of nutrient density and varied nutrition has been taken into account e.g. in the recommendations of the State Nutrition Advisory Board's Department of Health and Welfare (4 / 2020) and the Omaolo application for wellness coaching to different age groups. Maintaining good nutritional status promotes health, physical and mental functioning, and social well-being and quality of life.
Nutritional recommendations e.g. in the United States, have pointed out that the intake of important nutrients in the population has declined dramatically, while at the same time the number of chronic diseases has increased significantly. Many chronic diseases are associated with poor nutrition and inadequate exercise. One of the most important factors in the US Nutrition Recommendation is the importance of nutrient density as a cornerstone of the diet. The U.S. nutrition recommendation is based on a broad scientific base and extensive work by a committee with expertise.

Nutrient density, health promotion and disease treatment

A varied diet and the utilization of nutrient density support health promotion.
Scientific evidence in the treatment of various diseases is constantly accumulating. A varied and nutritious food plays an important role in promoting the health of the population and preventing disease. Increased overweight population is a particular challenge in industrialized countries. Overweight is linked to several chronic diseases and the central role of nutrient density in overcoming this problem has been found in new studies. Childhood nutrition has been shown to be associated with adult lifestyle diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular disease.
New research is needed and is constantly being produced to increase knowledge on the topic of nutrient density and disease treatment. With the COVID-19 crisis, recent studies are looking in particular at the link between the immune system and protective nutrients.
Closer cooperation with food producers, retail chains and restaurants is also needed to have a wider social impact
